What Is Epicondylitis or Tennis Elbow?

It is a general term people use to describe pain on the outside of the elbow, however the technical definition is inflammation of the lateral epicondyle tendon. It can also be caused by tendinopathy, which describes degeneration of the tendon caused by extended use.

What Are the Advantages of Tennis Elbow Straps?

They offer fantastic value for money and are easier to fit than products such as a epicondylitis clasp or a tennis elbow sleeve. The ease of fitting and adjustable level of compression also make them highly customisable and practical.

What Are the Different Types of Epicondylitis?

  1. Acute epicondylitis occurs when the extensor muscles are suddenly overloaded. This causes small micro-tears in the tendon where it attaches to the elbow
  2. Chronic epicondylitis normally occurs over a period of weeks and months. It often is the result of sustained intense physical activity, such as high-level athletic training of working a physically demanding job.

Are There Other Products Available?

For severe or recurrent cases of epicondylitis we recommend the more robust Jura Tennis Elbow Clasp. It provides additional support to the forearm and elbow but as a result, it is a slightly more expensive treatment option.

How Else Can Epicondylitis Be Treated?

There are a wide variety of treatments available to be used in conjunction with orthotic supports like the Promedics Epicondylitis Tennis Elbow Strap:

  • The most effective treatment for tennis elbow is to rest the joint in question. This is often combined with the use of cold compression packs to help reduce pain and inflammation
  • Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen are recommended if the pain persists
  • Sports massages such as a cross friction massage of the tendon can help once the initial inflammation has settled
  • In severe cases corticosteroid drugs can be injected into the painful area. Current research has shown this to be effective in the short term but the long term efficacy is still uncertain
