Does This Splint Provide Support Without Impacting Mobility?
The Procool Thumb Restriction Splint for CMC Support features an anatomically shaped strap which wraps around the CMC thumb joint and the first metacarpal for targeted CMC joint support. This makes it perfect for the treatment of osteoarthritis and tendonitis in the thumb, while still allowing full finger function.
What Is the CMC Joint and Where Is it Located?
As you can see in the image below, the carpometacarpal (CMC) joint is located at the base of your thumb, where the thumb metacarpal joins the wrist bones. As we get older, that CMC joint in particular often wears out, causing pain at the base of the thumb.

How to Treat CMC Joint Pain?
Treatment for relieving CMC joint pain involves using a splint to support the thumb and wrist. Using rigid splints (metal or plastic) are effective but make thumb use difficult. A flexible neoprene splint such as the Procool Thumb Splint is more practicable and its terry cloth inner lining feels comfortable against the skin.
How Effective are Splints for Treating CMC Osteoarthritis Pain?
A meta-study by the School of Physiotherapy, University of Otago found that the most recent evidence shows appropriate thumb splinting results in a notable reduction in pain for the vast majority of people. This study also showed that there was a marked improvement in wrist and thumb function when the splint was worn for several weeks.
